Powering up your People Management – Challenging Conversations

Overview

Managing others can be deeply rewarding; it can also be frustrating and challenging! This session will help to build your confidence and skills when managing poor performance and inappropriate behaviour. Spotting problems early and providing effective feedback is essential to maintain a positive team and progress toward team goals.

Feeling confident about addressing poor performance and unhelpful behaviour is an essential part of the people managers toolkit. The session will shed light on simple communication techniques that focus on addressing the issues whilst maintaining your relationship with members of your team.

Course structure

This is a bite-sized 90-minute virtual session to help improve your confidence and skills when managing poor performance and behaviour.  It will be interactive and allow you to share current challenges.

It will cover:

Assertive communication

  • We will consider the basics of assertive communication, comparing this approach with others in terms of its effectiveness. We will encourage you to identify your current approach to having difficult conversations and suggest changes to words, tone and body language that convey an assertive position.

Effective feedback

  • Simple and straightforward advice on providing feedback in the most effective and timely way. An opportunity to practice with some case study examples.

Planning and having a courageous conversation

  • An opportunity to put together the ideas and tips from the session into a real-play, we will guide you through planning and conducting a conversation to address poor performance or inappropriate behaviour.
