Rebecca is the Employee Communications Manager at David Lloyd Clubs. She has graduated with the CIPR Specialist Certificate – Internal Communications (L5). In fact, she enjoyed it so much that she is now studying for my CIPR Specialist Diploma – Internal Communications (L7)!

Why did you choose your qualification?
I’ve always had an interest in communications and the impact it can have on employee engagement. In my career, I have moved from an HR generalist background to engagement and, more recently, to specialising in internal communications. I really wanted to get a solid understanding of internal communications, reinforce my knowledge, and build a network of internal communication professionals.

How has studying with nesma helped you in your career?
The qualification has given me the skills and broader knowledge to consider all aspects of communication, from planning to stakeholder management, understanding risks, and planning for the unexpected. It’s never a quiet day in the world of communications.

What did you discover about yourself in the process?
I was nervous about completing an academic course, as it has been 25 years since I last studied at university. The sessions and support I received from the tutors showed me that it doesn’t need to be daunting. I have really enjoyed learning from other people.

What did you enjoy most about studying with us?
It was great to have the opportunity to meet other like-minded people, share ideas, and learn from each other. The small group really helped us bond and learn about each other’s organisations and their approach to internal communications. I definitely learnt there is no one-size-fits-all approach.

What would you do differently now?
Completing the course has helped me shape my communication campaigns to identify different audiences and stakeholders, ensuring our communications land effectively.

How do you unwind outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy staying active and have recently taken up yoga.

Where do you see yourself in ten years time?
Continuing to develop my career in Internal Communications. It plays a key role in employee engagement, which I am passionate about.

And finally, are there any business accounts/podcasts you would recommend?
I really enjoy listening to Candid Comms – the podcast by Rachel Miller and Steve Bartlett, Diary of a CEO
