Glyn has graduated with a CIPR Specialist Diploma – Internal Communications. This qualification is one of the specialist diplomas designed to enhance specific knowledge and skills by taking a strategic look at this exciting and growing practice area.
As the Head of Internal Communication for the GIAA (Government Internal Audit Agency), Glyn was keen to revisit his many years of hands-on experience in internal communication through a more academic lens and to improve his understanding of the specialism in a theoretical framework.
We asked him what he had leant about himself during the process of studying with nesma and what he enjoyed most! And a few other questions too.
Completing this CIPR qualification has made me feel more confident in my role and decision-making. I need to trust my instincts more. Knowing the theory behind why we do things a certain way in this field has given me more confidence to trust in myself when arguing the need for action.
It was refreshing to meet other communication professionals on the course to share our experiences and discuss ideas that made studying great fun. And Sarah, our tutor, was simply superb – knowledgeable but very engaging.
I can confirm I now pause to think more, weigh up my options, and back up my proposals and suggestions with theory and evidence.
What words of advice would you give anyone considering a career in PR/Comms?
It’s fascinating and rewarding work because it’s about understanding and enabling other people to make a difference. If you want it to be all about you, maybe think of another path!
What are the significant changes within your industry at present?
Data and tech. I want to know more about how we can use artificial intelligence and other tools to inform how we can target messages and measure their impact.
What do you enjoy most when you aren’t doing the day job?
I’m a very outdoor person. I’m usually pretty happy if I’m up a mountain, in a forest, or swimming in the sea.
The CIPR Specialist Diploma – Internal Communications is a postgraduate qualification that will develop your specialist knowledge and provide practical tools you can use in your internal communications. And most importantly, it will help you measure the impact that internal communications have on your company culture, work out a strategy to engage with colleagues and evaluate the outcomes.
