Celebrating 25 years of Chartered Marketer Status

Home » Celebrating 25 years of Chartered Marketer Status

This year marks 25 years since The Chartered Institute of Marketing was granted the privilege to bestow Chartered Marketer status. That’s 25 years since the CIM received their Royal Charter to confer Chartered Marketer Status.

nesma’s MD, Veronica Swindale, has been invited to attend the CIM’s celebratory event to mark the anniversary of this huge milestone at their HQ at Moor Hall, Cookham Berkshire.

So, what does it mean to be a Chartered Marketer?

It demonstrates marketing excellence and continuing professional development as a marketing practitioner. It signifies a combination of advanced education, experience, and a commitment to adhere to ethical standards within the industry.

That’s impressive! And nesma has the bragging rights that Veronica was one of the first 1,000 marketers worldwide to achieve the award. She received her 1st certificate at a memorable event at the Royal Festival Hall.

Today, the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) is the world’s leading marketing body, with over 28,000 members worldwide, of whom there are over 3,000 Chartered Marketers.

Reflecting on 25 years of Chartership, she comments, “It has given me a great sense of pride and belonging to the CIM throughout the last 25 years. It is a mark of professionalism and marketing knowledge which I have been thrilled to share with the 1,000’s students I have worked with, firstly at Gateshead College and for the past 15 years at nesma.

Like the other chartered professions such as accountancy and surveying, it is a strong endorsement of know-how and continuous learning which I, like many other Marketing Directors,  would recommend  to any serious marketer.”

What is lovely to see is that achieving Chartered Marketer Status is still firmly on the agenda of our CIM students.

Neave Ritchie is the Digital Engagement & Events Co-ordinator at Oasys Ltd | Arup Digital Technology and has recently completed the CIM L4 Certificate in Professional Digital Marketing. She says the CIM qualification has significantly advanced her marketing knowledge and allowed her to put new skills into practice. But her real goal is to become a Chartered Marketer, and she now sees herself as one step closer to that ambition.

Many of our students ask how they become CIM Chartered Marketers, so we have outlined the three key steps below;

  1. First, become an AssociateMember or Fellow of CIM (find out more about membership here).
  2. Then, complete two consecutive years of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), quickly done through CIM’s CPD app, which you can find on the App Store or Google Play store. Check out nesma’s free Know-How and Do sessions, accredited courses, masterclasses, and the many CIM modules.
  3. Finally, pass the Chartered Marketer Online Assessment.

Once Chartered, you can use the Chartered Marketer designatory letters (CMktr) and logo to demonstrate your unrivalled knowledge, skills and commitment as a professional marketer.

Is Chartered Marketer status worth the effort?

It may feel like a bit of a process in addition to a busy workload! However, keeping your skills up to date should really be a given if you want to grow as a marketer. And the reality is that employers expect all marketers and employees to develop their skills continually.

Maybe if you can demonstrate your activities are part of a formally recognised CPD programme, you may even be given funds or time off to study, coach or participate in special interest groups.

If you are going for Chartered Marketer status, you will need to record your reflections on what you’ve done, and the good news is that the CIM provides a useful online tool to make this easier.

Veronica is happy to chat with you if you need more help deciding whether to go for it.

Remember, it could make all the difference when it comes to securing your next senior marketing position.
