Meet Jennifer Scullion who works for NBS
What is your job in a nutshell?
My job involves raising the profile of NBS locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. I do this by generating stories and interesting content using three key themes; people, digital and knowledge. I work with people across the business to help communicate messages to our key stakeholders, be it customers, the industry or the local community.
Tell us about your career journey so far? How did you get your first job?
I started out as a communications intern at Northumberland County Council, working with a great team and helping to manage communications about tourism and broadband to childcare and illegal horse grazing! I heard about the interview via my University. Since then I’ve been very lucky to pass through another great role with Gentoo as PR and marketing assistant and then to where I am now as PR executive at NBS.
What is the most enjoyable part of your job?
I get to work with the majority of the business, so whether it’s chatting to customer engagement teams about how I can support their campaigns, technical teams to create new content to help recruit new roles, research teams on communicating their latest survey results or the digital team on how they can help me make my stories translate across social media – they say every day is a learning day and it’s so true!
What do you love about working in your industry?
It has so much potential. I never thought I would be able to work in the construction or digital sector because I have no experience in those roles on a practical level. Working as a public relations executive means I don’t have to understand every nitty gritty detail, I just need to be able to work with a range of people to make sure I communicate messages clearly and accurately to an audience, making sure I maintain the company’s positive reputation at all times.
Has studying with nesma helped you in your current role?
Definitely. I did have my degree in Public Relations when I completed my CIM Certificate in Professional Marketing but I wanted to broaden my understanding of how marketing and public relations worked together for more effective communications. This was always important as I had worked in places where I was part of a bigger communications team, and I wanted to have the same understanding and knowledge as others around me. I’d love to continue my studies with nesma one day.
