Richard is the Marketing Manager at Draeger Safety and has graduated with a CIM Diploma in Professional Marketing (L6). He started this qualification to help build his skills and knowledge but he found what he really valued was learning with professionals across a variety of sectors.
Why did you choose to study this qualification?
I wanted to expand my marketing knowledge, having gained many years’ experience but without any formal qualifications. I did not want to complete a course just for the sake of a certificate but to gain valuable knowledge and skills that would enhance my performance in my role and beyond. This course exceeded all of my expectations.
What did you discover about yourself in the process?
Tutors deliver the course with such vast experience. It was very humbling to ask for advice and input on scenarios that I experienced in my role. While participating in this course, I received ideas and suggestions I had never considered despite working in this industry for many years. The thing I will take away is that marketing professionals across all sectors are incredibly resourceful. Regardless of their specific experiences sharing a problem with such people is always worthwhile.
Has studying with nesma helped you in your career?
Completing this course taught me to structure my planning and thoughts in ways that are easy to communicate to all stakeholders, and this is and has been incredibly useful in my career and will be moving forward.
What did you enjoy most about studying?
I found taking a couple of hours out each week to work with and talk to motivated and knowledgeable individuals was extremely valuable. I always left each session with a host of new ideas and information.
What type of things do you do differently now?
My planning has improved, and the quality of my work is now at a level I would never have achieved without this course.
What words of advice would you give anyone considering a career in marketing/P.R.?
Do It! It’s better than working for a living!
What are the significant changes within your industry at present?
The COVID Pandemic has tested all marketeers. The traditional methods went on pause, and events, exhibitions and face to face meetings have all been reduced in the last 18 months. New innovative ideas and strategies are a credit to the marketeers of today and the inspiration for tomorrow’s innovators. Everyone is excited to see what more changes can be born from the enforced changes to ensure ongoing quality marketing to customers.
What do you enjoy most when you aren’t doing the day job?
I have four children, so in between attending various school activities (Which I honestly love), I enjoy training at the gym and most sporting activities. I am also a keen follower of Coventry City F.C. on their journey to the Premier League.
