Hannah Keville is an Arts Fundraising Consultant, a self-employed sole trader and a CIM Certificate in Professional Digital Marketing (L4) graduate.
Hannah works with a large number of small charities in a senior fundraising capacity; fundraising responsibility is often combined with marketing, in which she had no formal training or qualifications. Taking a CIM qualification has solved this! As she has gained marketing knowledge, confidence and a recognised qualification.
What did you discover about yourself whilst studying with nesma?
I hadn’t completed an academic course or qualification in nearly ten years, and the process reminded me why! I don’t think I’m best suited to studying or academia. However, this qualification has provided me with clarity and confidence, which I don’t think can be gained solely from on-the-job experience.
Has studying with nesma helped you in your career?
It’s given me greater confidence and credibility when considering fundraising and marketing roles. Since starting the qualification, I gained an interim contract as Head of Fundraising and Marketing for a major North East charity. I was shortlisted for the final two when applying for Head of Fundraising and Communications for a national charity.
What did you enjoy most about studying?
I liked the first module when the assessment was a multiple choice test, and we learned about marketing in more general terms. I also enjoyed designing a campaign for my organisation in the second module.
What type of things do you do differently now?
It reinforced the importance of planning and evaluation to me, so I now place even greater priority on that in my day-to-day work.
What words of advice would you give anyone considering a career in marketing/PR?
Gaining a CIM qualification can be a big confidence boost when starting in marketing.
What are the significant changes within your industry at present?
There is increased competition for funds and more fundraising through digital channels, and charities need to have a more significant digital profile to reach funders proactively seeking opportunities.
What do you enjoy most when you aren’t doing the day job?
Seeing the arts in action (theatre, music, dance, exhibitions!) and remembering why I do the day job!
