Graeme is a Marketing Executive at the University of Edinburgh Hospitality and Events Collection and has recently graduated with a CIM Diploma in Professional Marketing (L6).
Why did you choose this qualification?
I wanted to refresh my knowledge of marketing and boost my skills in the areas I felt less experienced.
What did you discover about yourself in the process?
Having been out of the practice of studying for a long time, I thought it might be too much to take on, but each module was laid out well for me to tackle each part and keep to a schedule. Juggling responsibilities was also challenging, but I managed even after welcoming my son into the world halfway through the second module. I surprised myself with how much coursework I could get through despite a severe lack of sleep!
Has studying helped you in your career?
The nesma course has helped boost my knowledge, and I have built more credibility in my team since starting the course. The qualification also enhances my CV and shows my commitment to furthering my career in marketing.
What did you enjoy most?
The course was very detailed; each module made me think differently about my day-to-day job, and I could easily see how what I was studying could be put into practice.
What do you do differently now?
The course has given me a more robust understanding and a detailed framework for building and managing a marketing plan, which I am now putting into practice in my current role.
What words of advice would you give anyone considering a career in marketing/PR?
It is a fast-paced, exciting industry, so you must be prepared to be open to constant learning, with new technology, regulations and trends popping up all the time. It keeps you on your toes, with no two days being the same.
What are the significant changes within your industry at present?
On the back of the Covid pandemic, tourism and events numbers are taking some time to recover, with more people looking for ‘staycations’ rather than travelling abroad, which means the target markets and messaging have changed slightly to accommodate this in the short term.
What do you enjoy most when you aren’t doing the day job?
When I have time, I enjoy playing music (saxophone and guitar) with my band.
