The roles of boards and directors: How do I fit?

Overview

The board is another function within a business.  It is a place where decisions are made based on information available.  It is the strategic head of the management structure of many but not all organisations.  Presenting to or attending boards is another level in communicating within an organisation.

Whether you are at the point of delivering your first presentations to a board or looking to join the board as a director you’re going to want to build an understanding of how boards function and how you fit into them.

Course structure

This is a bite sized 90-minute virtual session to help improve your understanding of Boards and Directors and how you fit with your Board.  It will be interactive to ensure you focus on your individual needs.

It will cover:

What is a board and how to identify the type of board I’m working with?

  • Not all boards are the same.  An understanding of the type of board you are dealing with helps develop the conversation you will have with them.  It is important to understand the various goals boards work towards because board goals are changed by internal and external pressures.  Having defined the current position your board is in; it is also important to understand how the basic functions are delivered within that board.

How to identify where you fit within that board

  • Developing an understanding of the fiduciary roles of a director will lead to an understanding of the challenges they face. This will help you focus on your own strengths and weaknesses.

How to build influence within that board

  • A boards’ effectiveness is dependent on the structure of the board and the competency of its directors.  Understanding this relationship allows you to develop the skills you need to fit into this dynamic.
