Meet Kate MD of Blue Shadow Marketing
Meet Kate, Managing Director of Blue Shadow Marketing
She works to promote growth in small firms by encouraging business owners to think more strategically about their marketing.
What is your job in a nutshell?
My role is Managing Director of Blue Shadow Marketing, a full-service marketing agency based in Cumbria. We promote growth in small firms by encouraging business owners to think more strategically about their marketing. As the agency grows, our job roles are becoming more defined and I now tend to concentrate on the finances, staffing, sales and account management. I still work on the strategy side of things for clients, although we are considering taking on another strategist as the business continues to grow.
Tell us about your career journey so far? How did you get your first job?
I began working at the age of 13 in a local supermarket and have been working ever since. Having worked my way through university at pubs and record stores in London, I settled into administrative roles in my early twenties at some of the nation’s best-known museums and art galleries, including the Imperial War Museum and the V&A. Having achieved a Masters degree, I decided it was a good time to escape London and to turn my passion for motorsport into a career. It had never occurred to me that there was any room for women in motorsport, but times were changing and I eventually worked my way up to senior management level. I took a role as PA to an ex-F1 driver who owns five UK race circuits before moving to Cumbria to work for M-Sport (the Ford World Rally Team) in their business development team. After having a baby, I continued to work and travel with the team, managing the FIA World Rally Championship Academy in 2013, until I found I needed more flexibility to care for my daughter. I set up business as a freelance marketer and business coach in 2014 and have since grown the company into a full-service marketing agency.
What is the most enjoyable part of your job?
I can say, without hesitation, that working with a diverse range of people is the most enjoyable part of my job. We pride ourselves on a strong value system at Blue Shadow Marketing: we listen first, then listen more; we’re stubborn on vision and flexible on details; we remain agile and focus on results; we laugh and share with compassion; we continue to challenge convention and we find excellence in pursuit of perfection. It is really important to us that our clients and suppliers align with these values; most of them do and the outcomes are strong working relationships that yield positive results. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of helping a stumbling business to flourish and fly.
What do you love about working in your industry?
What I love about running an agency is the ability to work across industry sectors. We work with clients in nuclear, tourism, retail, wholesale, the arts, professional services, construction, education, healthcare and we also help to implement the UK and European funded initiatives. We employ specialists in various areas of skills and knowledge and I enjoy bringing the right teams together to deliver successful outcomes for our clients.
Has studying with nesma helped you in your current role?
I studied the CIM Level 6 Diploma in Professional Marketing (Digital Strategy) with nesma and it really made me up my game. I was a self-taught marketer and I did reasonably well, but it wasn’t until I began studying that I realized how much I didn’t know about marketing. It was tough going back into degree-level education after 14 years, but nesma supported me in working from home and keeping me on the right track. Having been awarded my Diploma, I have applied to become a Member of the CIM, which means I can undertake CPD with the aim of becoming a Chartered Marketer in 2019.
